NORTHAM – Four people, including a murder suspect, were arrested at the troubled Northam mine near Thabazimbi in Limpopo.

Police spokesman Moatshe Ngoape said on Tuesday the suspects were arrested during an operation in the area of the mine last night.

Ngoape added that the suspects were arrested in connection with the public violence and malicious damage to property that took place during the violent protest actions at the boom gate of the Zondereinde mine on Monday, June 6 last week.

“One of the four is also arrested for the murder of 52-year-old Thembinkosi Mhlabeni who was stabbed to death during the mentioned protest action,” said Colonel Ronel Otto on Tuesday.

The ages of the suspects ranged from 41 to 52.

Otto said the hunt for the second murder suspect was still ongoing.

The investigation into the shooting and killing of 45-year-old Mthetheleli Zefunele on Sunday, June 5 at a hiking spot in Northam was still ongoing.

During the investigation process, people are taken in for questioning but no formal arrests have yet been made.

The suspects are due to appear in the Northam Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
