PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Northern Territory state government has signed off on a project facilitation agreement with ASX-listed junior Sherwin Iron over its Roper River project.

The facilitation agreement outlined how the government and Sherwin Iron would work together to address critical issues around the project, including freight logistics and transport, environmental protection and employment opportunities.

Deputy Chief Minister David Tollner said on Monday that the Roper River project would create 200 jobs in the construction phase and 400 by the time it is fully operational. Several of the workers will be sourced from the region, including local Indigenous communities.

“The project has already been given Major Project status. This clearly indicates the government’s desire for this project to succeed and to deliver the substantial economic and regional development benefits that it offers,” Tollner said.

Initial production was expected to start later this year with export volumes of up to three-million tons a year of iron-ore to be shipped across East Arm Wharf. The project has an indicated resource of some 39.5-million tons grading 57.9% iron.

“There is no doubt that projects such as Sherwin Iron are exactly the type of projects that government is facilitating to achieve our objective of stimulating stronger economic growth across the Territory,” Tollner said.
