Newmont leads world sustainability index in ninth year of inclusion
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – NYSE-listed Newmont Mining is the mining leader on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) in overall sustainability, marking the ninth consecutive year the company has been included on the index.
This year, the DJSI World – one of the most highly regarded sustainability indices – included 317 global companies identified as leaders in the areas of sustainable economic, environmental and social performance. Newmont was the first gold company named to the index in 2007 and had been included on the DJSI North America Index every year since 2006.
“Every day we focus on creating value and improving lives through sustainable and responsible mining. This translates into safe working conditions and good opportunities for employees; sustainable economic development in our host communities and strong returns and prospects for our shareholders and other stakeholders,” president and CEO Gary Goldberg stated.
Newmont also received the highest score in several areas, including climate strategy; environmental policy/management systems; corporate citizenship and philanthropy; and labour practises and human rights.
The world's largest gold producer by output Barrick Gold was also named to the DJSI for the eighth consecutive year and was also included in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the ninth year in a row.
"It tells us that we are continuing to live up to the values that, from day one, have driven Barrick's success, values like trust and transparency, social responsibility and accountability and the pursuit of excellence in all that we do. When we stay true to these values and build strong partnerships with host communities, governments and our employees, we position ourselves for long-term success," Barrick president Kelvin Dushnisky noted.
