New Hope’s Qld expansion plans open to public scrutiny
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Queensland government has opened the expansion of New Hope Coal’s New Acland project to public scrutiny.
The state government on Monday invited members of the public to have their say on the environmental impact of the proposed mine expansion, which was expected to create 260 construction along with a number of operational jobs.
The New Acland project is the proposed third stage of the New Acland coal mine.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the independent Coordinator-General’s new request for final comment on the project’s environmental impact was an important step in the assessment of the mine expansion proposal.
“The Queensland government is committed to growing the state’s four pillar economy and ensuring successful co-existence between the agricultural and resource sectors,” Seeney said.
“We also want to deliver more jobs for Queenslanders and this A$900-million project could deliver 260 construction jobs and up to 435 operational jobs.”
The government had initially not supported New Acland’s original 2007 expansion plan owing to its effect on high-quality agricultural land and proximity to local townships.
However, Seeney pointed out that since 2012, the proponent had reduced the project’s footprint by about 60% and had now confirmed it would abandon 1 401 ha of the mining lease area, including the town of Acland.
The company had also removed the proposed relocation of a heritage-listed item, reduced the impact on strategic cropping land.
Furthermore, New Hope had reduced throughput from the proposed mine from up to ten-million tonnes a year, to a maximum of 7.5-million tonnes a year, reducing the proposed mine life from 2042 to 2029.
Public comment would close on September 29.
