Canadian major Barrick has appointed Hongyu Cai as an independent director, a move which executive chairperson John Thornton says will bring a unique perspective to the board.

Cai is a finance and investment professional with nearly two decades of experience. After graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she worked with Goldman Sachs in the US and then with China International Capital Corporation in the greater China region until spring 2021.

Cai, a chartered financial analyst and chartered alternative investment analyst, is extensively versed in equity markets, from strategic planning to mergers and acquisitions, commented Thornton.

“Her experience in both the American and Chinese capital markets will bring a unique perspective to the board, particularly given China’s position as a leading producer and consumer of gold, and the biggest driver of copper demand in the world,” he said.

Barrick has a strategic partnership with Chinese mining companies in Argentina and Papua New Guinea.
