PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior Minbos Resources has launched a desktop study to determine the viability of producing yellow phosphorus (P4) at its Cácata phosphate mine in Angola.

The ASX-listed company on Thursday said it had received strong expressions of interest from international investors for the production of P4 from both its existing phosphate resources at Cácata as well as new licences under application.

“The P4 strategy allows us to explore the utilisation of medium grade phosphate rock with a high silica content unsuitable for the fertilizer market, and outside of our existing mine plan, and combine it with cheap electricity in Angola to supply a critical mineral in the battery materials supply chain,” said Minbos CEO Lindsay Reed.

“Being able to increase production from the existing mine and beneficiation plant, with minimal additional investment, would lower the cost of phosphate rock production for both the fertilizer and P4 markets.”

Minbos on Thursday said that in order to double the capacity of the beneficiation plant for this Stage 2 expansion, should it prove feasible, the company would only be required to invest an additional $1.7-million to $3.3-million in capital.

A 2022 definitive feasibility study estimated a capital cost of $48.5-million to develop the phosphate project in Angola, based on a 187 500 t/y operating capacity, delivering 236 000 t/y of fertilizer over a project life of 20 years, based on a maiden ore reserve of 4.72-million tonnes at 30.1% phosphates at the Cácata phosphate mine.

Minbos said on Thursday that Angola, with its cheap electricity prices and economic free zone, presented a compelling opportunity for the production of P4.

The company is now undertaking a desktop study to determine the viability of the Stage 2 strategy with a view to securing technical and funding partners to advance this strategy.
