Heavy-equipment manufacturer Bell Equipment has started low-volume production of the Bell B60D articulated dump truck (ADT) for the South African market, and will launch the new Finlay dual power plants later this month.

Bell Equipment product marketing manager: ADTs Tristan du Pisanie notes that the B60D combines the two-axle concept of a rigid truck with the driven front axle, and independent front and rear chassis of a traditional ADT. Bell Equipment plans to ramp up production of the B60D towards the end of 2016.

“This truck is a true 4 x 4, with full articulation steering and oscillation joint to keep all four driving wheels on the ground to fully use the traction that is available,” he says.

Du Pisanie explains that the larger B60D truck delivers lower cost for each tonne transported and has the advantage of having a tighter turning circle and better off-road capability than its counterparts.

He notes that the B60D, owing to its superior off-road ability, is further ideally suited to those customers who would ordinarily have to stop production when using rigid trucks, owing to poor underfoot conditions in wet environments.

It is also suited to customers who would like a more versatile truck that is capable of setting up a mine or a pit and operating with rigid trucks during main production, as well as closing down a mine or a pit, Du Pisanie elaborates, emphasising that the truck was manufactured with the aim of improving economies of scale - moving more dirt for comparatively less in terms of operating costs - and has proven highly successful in this regard.

He highlights that the B60D has generated significant interest in the mining industry – “beyond the company’s initial expectations”.

“We've received positive feedback and pleasing results from sites where we have trialed and tested our prototypes. In May, three units were delivered to a mining operation in the Piet Retief area, in KwaZulu-Natal, where they continue to perform well,” Du Pisanie adds.

Dual Power Plants
The Finlay dual power plants are a new Finlay mobile crushing and screening concept, Bell Equipment says.

The dual power plants comprise the J-1175 jaw crusher, and the C-1540 cone crusher with the 694+ inclined screen.

The dual-power plants can either be driven from an external electrical supply to provide significant savings on energy costs, or they can be driven with the on-board generator set (gen-set). This saves energy and enables the operator to move and use the machine where there is no electric supply, providing the flexibility and versatility of current standard models, says Bell Equipment alliance and new business development marketing manager Stephen McNeill.

In applications where a full train is powered by the on-board gen-set configuration, the crushers generate sufficient energy to enable the operator to run the Finlay 694+ dual-powered inclined screen for essentially no cost (of energy) when used in conjunction with the J-1175 dual-powered jaw crusher.

“The trains give customers the flexibility to operate a fully mobile crushing and screening plant that can either be powered from mains electric or self-powered if required,” he says.

The B25E 6 x 4 supertruck
In April the company further added the B25E 6 x 4 supertruck to its small truck range to deliver a cost-effective and versatile alternative to road-going tipper trucks in the quarrying and construction industries.

"There is a substantial difference between conventional trucks and our standard offering of six-wheel-drive ADTs in terms of off-road ability,” says Du Pisanie.

He notes that an ADT excels at carrying a payload in substantially challenging conditions, such as soft sand, deep mud, undulating ground and rough roads, as well as steep inclines and declines, adding that these types of conditions would typically result in more conventional trucks either becoming stuck or failing prematurely.

"This level of off-road ability does come at a price. Therefore, we filled the gap with the B18E 6 x 4 and B20E 6 x 4 supertrucks – the latter being homologated for road use. We have introduced the B25E 6 x 4 – recognising that this configuration, with a larger payload, will be a highly productive and attractive proposition for some of the existing customers,” says Du Pisanie.

He adds that the B25E 6 x 4 has the same 24 t payload and engine performance as Bell Equipment’s standard B25E. It also shares the characteristic ADT layout, but has a 6 x 4 drivetrain and 20.5R25 tyres to deliver a substantial cost saving, compared with that of the standard B25E.

Further benefits of the B25E 6 x 4 supertruck, compared to those of a tipper truck, include the driven front axle, which assists steering in soft sand in combination. Additionally, the Bell trucks have fully certified roll over protective structure/falling objective protective structure operator cabs that are becoming more necessary to meet safety requirements on construction and mining sites.
