Carefully planned lockout and tagout procedures limit the risk of injuries or accidents caused by the inadvertent starting of machines or equipment while they are being serviced or maintained, says engineering components distributor Bearing Man Group (BMG) senior product manager Ryan Basset.

The company supplies and supports the complete range of lock safety and security solutions American padlock manufacturer Master Lock. Basset explains that it is critical for employers to do everything possible to protect employees and prevent accidents caused by negligence during maintenance and repairs of equipment and machinery.

“The correct safety system ensures that there is a reliable key control procedure in place that restricts access to only those workers who need to be in a designated area. In safe environments, productivity is enhanced, as there is no downtime resulting from unnecessary accidents or injury,” states Basset.

The lockout and tagout devices from Master Lock, Basset says, have been designed for a simple yet effective method of lockout so as to prevent workers from unintentionally energising equipment while a maintenance job is in progress. He adds that access to equipment is restricted until everyone involved in a repair or maintenance project has removed their lockout and tagout padlock and accessories from the device.

Basset states that the Master Lock range encompasses safety padlocks and relevant accessories to suit all types of situations requiring lockout and tagout. Products include electrical lockout devices for circuit breakers, plugs and switches; devices for ball, gate and butterfly valves; pneumatic lockout devices and lockout cables, lock boxes and lockout stations, he explains.

The BMG Safety padlocks “include laminated steel, powder- coated and anodised aluminium, as well as Zenex thermoplastic padlocks”. “The Zenex range of robust and nonsparking padlocks is available with different shackle lengths and diameters, manufactured from hardened steel, 316 stainless steel and nylon,” reports Basset, highlighting that numerous colour and engraving variations are possible for easy identification of personnel, departments and maintenance teams.

Zenex padlocks are available as key retaining in keyed-different, keyed-alike or master-keyed suites appropriate for individual applications, Basset explains. For enhanced safety and security, these padlock key references can be tailored and registered to a company to ensure there is no key duplication.

Basset says: “A comprehensive range of standard lockout tags, labels and signs are also available and customer-manufactured orders can also be accommodated to suit individual requirements.” This signage equipment, explains Basset, is heat and chemical resistant to withstand all circumstances.

Elaborating on the durability and manufacturing of the products, Basset states that the Master Lock integrated safety solutions are manufactured according to stringent international and local quality and safety specifications, adding that many of these products are certified by explosion prevention service provider Expolabs for safe use in dangerous and hazardous environments.
