Kumba doing right thing to explore in our wonderfully endowed Northern Cape

Hats off to Anglo American group company Kumba Iron Ore, led by CEO Themba Mkhwanazi, for doing such exciting mining exploration in our wonderfully prospective Northern Cape. South Africa needs so much more of this kind of exploration, as this month’s document by the economic transformation committee of the ruling African National Congress points out.

Kumba is not only searching and finding more iron-ore, but it is also turning it quickly to positive account. Compliments to the boards of both Kumba and Anglo for announcing go-ahead for the R7-billion Kapstevel South quality iron-ore project. South African mining needs many more investments of this kind – and without the exploration hard yards by Kumba over the last eight years, this would not have been possible.

South Africa is blessed with exceptionally good-quality iron-ore, which will stand us in great stead as China weans itself off standard iron-ore in the interests of climate-change mitigation. Kumba is working well with Transnet and the Port of Saldanha, which is essential. Without good logistics, all will come to naught.
