PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The federal government has granted major project facilitation (MPF) status to ASX-listed Iron Road’s Central Eyre project, in South Australia.

Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss granted the project MPF status after Iron Road demonstrated that the project met the eligibility criteria, and was of strategic significance to Australia, which included economic growth, exports, employment and infrastructure development.

The MPF status, which was valid until the end of 2016, would include the benefit of a coordinated approach to federal and state processes to ensure that they occurred simultaneously and without duplication.

The MPF also provided a point of contact in the federal government to allow prompt resolution of issues, as well as identifying access to relevant government programmes, Iron Road said.

The company noted that the MPF status would allow a timely and efficient approvals process over the proposed mining, rail and port infrastructure developments.

“We are delighted to have received this important recognition from the federal government, which is in addition to the major development status declared by the South Australian government in August 2013,” said Iron Road MD Andrew Stocks.

He noted that the granting of MPF status was another positive step towards Iron Road achieving its vision to become a trusted and reliable supplier of iron concentrate to the Asian marketplace.

A definitive feasibility study on the Central Eyre project confirmed that it could deliver about 21.5-million tonnes a year of concentrate, over a 25-year mine life, generating revenues of about $2.8-billion a year. Nearly 50-million tonnes of export capacity has been identified at the proposed Port at Cape Hardy for potential third-party users.

Iron Road was hoping to start construction during 2015, with first production expected by 2018.
