PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper developer Hot Chili was looking to enhance the economics of its Productora project, in Chile, with the introduction of an oxide processing option.

The ASX-listed junior said on Wednesday that it had signed a letter of intent with Chilean national mining corporation Empresa Nacional de Mineria (ENAMI) to negotiate an oxide processing option.

The current prefeasibility study (PFS) for the Productora project did not consider the possibility of processing the oxide material contained at the project; however, Hot Chile said that this had the potential to enhance the upfront economics of the project and generate substantial benefits for both companies, as well as the local community.

Hot Chili and ENAMI would cooperate formally on technical studies and start negotiations on the oxide processing option for Productora.

The Productora resource currently stood at 165.2-million tonnes, grading 0.6% copper, 0.1 g/t gold and 132 g/t molybdenum, for 920 000 t of copper, 590 000 oz of gold and 22 000 t of molybdenum.

The oxide component of the resource stood at 14.1-million tonnes, grading 0.6% copper, 0.1 g/t gold and 93 g/t molybdenum.

The PFS would be based on an upgraded 165.2-million-ton resource estimate, and would benefit from a second resource upgrade expected in the second half of the year.

The study would assess the establishment of an opencut mining operation, a copper concentrator processing facility, as well as other associated infrastructure.

The recently completed scoping study found that the Productora project could support a processing rate of around 11-million tons a year, to produce around 220 000 t of ore, grading 25% copper and 6 g/t gold.
