High-density sludge treatment plant, South Africa
Name and Location
High-density sludge treatment plant, Gauteng, South Africa.
Client
Central Rand Gold (CRG) and Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA).
Project Description
The project involves the construction of a new high-density sludge treatment plant for the Central basin to contain the rising water table below the critical level of 186 m below surface (mbs), as measured at the South West vertical shaft.
Value
Not stated.
Duration
Construction of the treatment plant is scheduled to start in January 2013.
Latest Developments
On October 16, the Department of Water Affairs confirmed that the TCTA was authorised to finalise the awarding of the contract for the construction of the treatment plant.
Further to this, an agreement has been signed between CRG and the TCTA to give effect to the donation of pumps, previously bought from international technology group, Andrtiz Ritz, to TCTA for the planned construction of the treatment plant.
The pumps, together with the treatment plant, will contain the rising table below 186 mbs.
In addition, the pumps and the treatment plant will enable CRG to gradually dewater the Central basin, at an incremental operating cost, to the maximum operating depth of the pumps of 400 mbs.
The agreement also gives CRG the option to undertake further dewatering activities, which will allow the liberation of the company’s resources lying below the 400 mbs level, as future mining operations might dictate.
