Goscor’s JB Matabane School initiative puts the spotlight on the importance of education
Company Announcement - The Goscor Group of Companies is very passionate about giving back to the community through numerous sustainable corporate social investment activities. “Education enhancement and performance upliftment are Goscor’s prime interest. Goscor CEO Neil Wilson who shares Nelson Mandela’s passion for education, believes that without education the country is nothing, a strong motivating therefore for us to invest in education in various ways,” explains Portia Xaki, Marketing Assistant for the Goscor Group.
Goscor’s policy is amongst others to encourage all employees to their full potential, thus focusing on giving the best that Goscor can to those who need education. Goscor’s list of charities, non-profit organisations and a host of other initiatives in support of disadvantaged or under-privileged communities is on-going. “There is always a need out there like JB Matabane School, whom we have supported on numerous occasions over the years,” continues Portia. As a non-fee paying school with 1500 learners it topped the need-list and this is why we selected the school as the beneficiary of our charity golf day held on 23rd October 2014.”
The Goscor Charity Golf Day is an annual event and each year a new beneficiary is chosen to receive the donations raised on the day. Portia explains, “From the total of R100k we raised last year, R5k was spent on a braai day for the teachers at JB Matabane to thank them for their dedication and on-going support structure they provide for the learners. A few Goscor employees joined them for this joyous occasion. A further R54k was spent on a science kit and R26k was spent on fixing school chairs.” The official hand over took place at the school on 3rd March 2015.
Portia says that the remaining funds have been set aside to assist with the school’s IT needs. “We closely monitor school and consistently assess their educational needs and do our best to fulfil these requirements.”
Other Goscor initiatives include support over the past four years of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust through cash donations raised by Goscor Lift Truck Company’s annual Golf Day. The Centre is a faith based ministry that support people infected with HIV/AIDS in a practical way.
Goscor Hi-Reach (GH-R) has been supporting The Hope Factory, a non-profit organisation which assists individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Through an interview and selection process, existing entrepreneurs are selected to join their Enterprise Development Programme and receive the opportunity to capitalise on the array of services on offer to assist them in enterprise development. “This is part of GH-R’s Socio Economic Development programme and contributes towards their overall Broad Based Economic Development strategy,“ adds Portia.
“In addition to the JB Matabane program being a huge success, it was also such a rewarding experience for all the Goscor employees who participated. We are planning to hold even more fund raising days this year so we can continue contributing to this deserving school to assist the learners in obtaining a good education because this is the key that unlocks the door to a successful future,” concludes Portia.
