Five Ways of Pipe and Tube Bending

Pipe and tube bending is known to be a less expensive method in the metal and plastic industry, compared to welding materials to join components together. It is the process of permanently shaping metal or plastic pipes for various purposes. This process uses mechanical force to bend the pipe or tubing to follow the shape of a die. There are several ways of bending a pipe or tube, and below are five of them:

1. Ram Bending

The ram-type bending is one of the oldest tube bending methods known in the industry today. It is commonly used in automobile manufacturing for exhaust pipes and electrical conduits. Thus, you will find ram benders in many muffler shops. This type of bending is also famous for use in square tubing since it usually prevents wrinkling on the material. Even though the ram bending does not give you much control compared to other methods, it is by far the most cost-effective and most straightforward way of bending tubes and pipes.

2. Roll Bending

For tubes and pipes with large circumferences, the ring roll bending is an effective method to use. It uses benders with three-ring rolls in a pyramid position that can be adjusted manually or hydraulically. This method is popular in the industry since it produces almost uniform cross-sections with less deformation. It is regularly used for crafting drum rolls, appliance frames, and other rounded materials with large diameters. Most benders also use roll bending to produce continuous coils of pipes and create spirals.

3. Compression Bending

Compression or press bending is one of the oldest bending processes used for cold pipes and tubing. It uses a roller or compression die, and some call it a follow block for bending the pipe or tube around a fixed die. However, some deformation may occur since the pipeline has no internal support during the process. This bending method is commonly used in the production of household and commercial items like towel bars, chairs, and table legs.

4. Rotary Draw Bending

If you need exact pipe diameter measurements with a high-quality finish, then the rotary draw will be the most suitable bending method. It provides a high percentage of precision. Further, machines used for draw bending can be programmed to duplicate complicated bending processes on various works without compromising uniformity and accuracy. The rotary draw bending is used for handrails, conduit bending, trailer frames, vehicle chassis, and roll cages. The proper and complete tooling is necessary when using the rotary draw bending application for aesthetically attractive results.

5. Mandrel Bending

The mandrel bending method produces precise results with very few deformations on tubes or pipes. It can also handle thin materials without breakage due to the internal support it uses during the process. A flexible mandrel is put inside the tube shaft to prevent deformation while forming the material through a bending die. Mandrel bending is generally applied to create exhaust pipes, heat exchange, and dairy tubing.

Factors that Affect Pipe and Tube Bending

There are things you need to consider to be able to achieve the best pipe and tube bending results. Here are the primary factors that can affect the results of bending pipes and tubes:

Good Tooling

A good tooling setup is necessary to get a perfect bend, especially when you are using the rotary draw bending. You need to take into consideration the hardness of the mandrel. Remember that you cannot use a hard mandrel on a hard tube or a soft mandrel on a soft tube. As a general rule, you need to have a combination of hard and soft materials. There are also other tool considerations you need to take into account as follows:

  • Radial growth
  • Quality of tube and welds
  • Wiper and clamping dies

Lubrication Factors

Nowadays, non petroleum-based synthetic lubricants are becoming popular for tube bending works. Since it is often in the form of a paste or gel, you can dilute it according to the consistency required for your bending job. Remember that heavy-duty bending will require more concentrated lubrication. You also need to keep wiper dies lubricated appropriately at the contact point to prevent quick deterioration.

Good Machine

Proper machines are needed to achieve the best tube and pipe bending outputs. The quality of your machinery will depend on material grade and wall thickness, among others. You must know the specifications of your machine to be able to determine if it is appropriate to do the bending work requirements. Some latest and innovative devices can combine processes. Thus, some can do both roll and rotary draw bending methods.

For quick and inexpensive metal works, tube and pipe bending will be the best choice. It allows you to work on large bulk projects precisely and with visually appealing results.
