The Mobile Moviemakers Film Festival Cape Town (MMOCA) is inviting aspiring creative filmmakers to submit their short films for the inaugural online mobile-phone moviemaking film festival.

The festival aims to showcase, nurture and support emerging creative filmmakers skilled at creating cinematic video using a smartphone, tablet, action camera or drone.

“The inspiration behind the mobile festival stems from a need for change. With its focus on mobile-phone filmmaking, the festival hopes to reach a much bigger group of aspiring filmmakers, compared with what traditional film festivals are able to do,” says festival director Dominique Vandenhoudt.

“It is all about storytelling and not the size of your camera. With almost a billion mobile phones on the continent, Africa can become a leader in this new form of visual art.”

Entries should be submitted to the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, before November 13, for the categories of documentary, fiction and advertisement. An entry fee of R100 is payable; however, students can register free of charge.

The winners, to be unveiled at a red carpet awards night at the Belgian House, in Cape Town, at the close of the festival, will be awarded a production grant of R10 000 and a jury prize of R5 000.

“An added benefit is our free professional MMOCA online workshops and tutorials. We encourage anyone to register, as you will no doubt learn the art of creating compelling videos,” adds festival operations manager Lies Deneys.

MMOCA is an initiative of the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa and is powered by the Belgian Consulate in Cape Town, Flanders, Wallonia-Bruxelles International, the Flemish Investment and Trade organisation, as well as the Wallonia Trade and Investment organisation.
