Enviro studies under way at Oxley project
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Environmental studies have started at the Oxley potassium project, near Geraldton in Western Australia, as part of the prefeasibility study (PFS), owner Centrex Metals reported on Tuesday.
The company appointed ecology expert COOE to conduct a flora and fauna survey over the main project area and hired groundwater consultant CDM Smith for the groundwater studies for the project site.
Canada-based potash engineering firm Novopro has started analysis of the hydrometallurgical component of the process circuit, developed in a scoping study, to recommend optimisations for the PFS. The Novopro study is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Centrex said it would award similar studies for the grinding and pyrometallurgical components of the process circuit soon.
Further, the project developer reported that the feasibility study designs for ammonia and nitric acid plants at the Oxley site had been completed.
The PFS, which follows a successful scoping study, will consider a start-up potassium nitrate (NOP) speciality fertiliser option and a second stage expansion into the bulk potassium fertiliser market.
The scoping study, prepared by Amec Foster Wheeler, only focused on the NOP operation but showed upside for a larger scale expansion. The NOP operation is based on an inferred mineral resource of 38-million tonnes at 10% potassium oxide (K2O), from a total of 155-million tonnes at 8.3% K2O. The resources to date cover only 3 km of the overall 32 km striking area that forms the basis of the project.
