PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior explorer Dome Gold Mines has reported a maiden resource at its Sigatoka iron sands project, in Fiji.

The project is estimated to host about 131.6-million tonnes, including an indicated resource of 25-million tonnes, grading 11.6% heavy mineral sands and an inferred resource of 5.9-million tonnes, grading 11% heavy minerals at the Sigatoka River deposit, as well as an inferred resource of 100.7-million tonnes, grading 17% heavy minerals at the Kulukulu deposit.

“It is an exciting milestone for Dome to have completed this maiden resource estimate for the Sigatoka project, having only acquired the project in recent months,” said Dome CEO Jack McCarthy.

“We are aiming to develop a robust magnetite dredging project that will help fuel our further growth to become a dominant player in the Fijian mining sector. Having confirmed the resources at Sigatoka, we are now moving ahead to prepare an application for a mining licence, which we anticipate submitting before the end of 2014.”

The iron sands would be dredged from the Sigatoka river bed and processed by gravity and magnetic separation to produce a saleable product ready for export. In addition to magnetite concentrate, nonmagnetic heavy mineral concentrate and sand and gravel suitable for industrial or land reclamation uses, would also be produced during processing.
