Company Announcement - DCD Marine Cape Town has long focused on education and skills development, which is why the company welcomed the opportunity to engage through Total E&P South Africa, with learners from the LEAP Science and Maths School in Cape Town, and introduce them to future career opportunities in the oil and gas industry. DCD Marine, which provides turnkey services to the oil and gas industry through repair and maintenance of various types of vessels and rigs, hosted a two-hour session at its premises at Table Bay Harbour on 15th July 2015.  For many children, the event opened up a whole new world of possibilities for future careers.

“We were keen to host the children to hopefully inspire as many of them as possible to follow a career in oil and gas and ship repair. This event formed part of our overarching corporate social investment focus which is very much pro-education and skills development,” says Zayyaan Darries, PR Officer from DCD Marine Cape Town. The event, initiated and supported by Total E&P South Africa, proved to be a great success; and many learners expressed an interest in returning to DCD Marine Cape Town during the execution of a vessel or rig repair project, in order to gain a better understanding of the industry.

“It was a very fruitful morning, and we are grateful to DCD Marine Cape Town for affording our learners the time and opportunity to discover more about the maritime and oil and gas industries,” says Sabrina Lee, External Relations Manager from the LEAP School. “Their eyes were opened to the exciting world of maritime project work.”
LEAP schools provide free education, which is focused on maths and science, to economically disadvantaged and marginalised students from grades 8 to 12. The LEAP philosophy is to provide ‘self-liberating’ high school education which takes the children on a journey of learning of self-awareness, emotional intelligence and life skills. “We want our children to discover the capacity they have to take charge of their own lives. We believe that exposing them to opportunities, through companies such as DCD Marine Cape Town, is invaluable in giving them a wider perspective and a sense of hope for their futures,” says Lee.

Apart from introducing the children to the ‘ins and outs’ of project work in the oil and gas industry at large, DCD Marine Cape Town outlined the wide range of  potential career opportunities in project management within its own organisation. These include careers in finance, management, marketing, procurement, health & safety and quality.
'The learners were all very enthusiastic about this visit, and I am sure this will have helped them gain a better understanding of a world they never before would have dreamed of", says Henry Delafon, Director General at Total E&P South Africa.
