Name of the Mine
Corsa mine operations.

Location
Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and Garrett County, Maryland, in the US.

Mine Owner/s
Junior natural resource company Corsa Coal Corp.

Brief Description
Corsa’s operations comprise multiple underground and surface mines. The operations consist of five active mines. Acosta, Horning and Casselman are the underground mines. The surface operations consist of the Schrock Run/Schrock Run extension north and south pits, and the Rhoads mine.

The mines supply high-quality, low-volatile metallurgical coal primarily for steelmaking.

Underground operations are projected to continue until 2025 and the surface operations until 2032.

Brief History
The coal properties have been extensively developed by mining activities for more than 50 years. During that period, and prior to Corsa acquiring the operations, drilling and exploration have been undertaken by numerous entities.

Corsa Coal Corp was established as a junior resource company and has grown through strategic acquisitions.

The company acquired the Wilson Creek Energy assets in 2010 and later acquired PBS Coals Inc from Severstal Resources in 2014, expanding its mining footprint in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Primary Metals/Minerals
Metallurgical coal.

Secondary Metals/Minerals
Thermal coal, a by-product in some operations.

Geology/Mineralisation
The coal-bearing formations on the properties are Carboniferous in age, being in the Pennsylvanian system, which includes the Monongahela, Conemaugh, Alleghany and Upper Pottsville groups. These coal-bearing formations contain two-fifths of the US’ bituminous coal deposits, extend more than 1 400 km from northern Alabama to Pennsylvania, and are part of the Appalachian basin.

The mining operation comprises the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning,

Lower Kittanning and Brookville coal seams. These seams vary in thickness from 0.30 m to more than 2.4 m.

The coal is characterised by low-volatile properties suitable for metallurgical applications.

Mineable coal seams within the properties are typically low-ash, low- to high-sulphur and high-thermal bituminous coals.

Reserves
As of December 31, 2023, Corsa Mine controls proven and probable reserves of about 37.9-million recoverable tons of coal, with 78% classified as proven and 22% as probable.

Resources
The total measured and indicated in situ coal resources are estimated at 170.2-million tons, with an additional inferred resource of 44 000 t.

Type of Mine
A combination of underground and surface mining.

Mining Method
Underground – room-and-pillar, using continuous mining equipment.
Surface – conventional truck-and-shovel, including auger and highwall mining, where applicable.

Major Infrastructure/Equipment
Existing infrastructure includes an operating preparation plant facility operated by Corsa, including raw and clean coal storage, a unit train rail load-out, and refuse disposal (Cambria); a temporarily idled preparation plant (Shade Creek); an idle preparation plant on care and maintenance (Rockwood); three active underground mines (Acosta, Horning and Casselman) and associated support facilities, one idle underground mine and associated support facilities, and two active surface mines (Schrock Run/Schrock Run extension north and south pits, and the Rhoads mine).

Coal can be shipped to various customers by rail using the CSX and Norfolk Southern rail networks.

Prospects
Corsa Coal Corp announced in January 2025 that it and all its subsidiaries (collectively, the Corsa Group), had filed for voluntary Chapter 11 relief in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and that the group intendeds to conduct a sale of assets pursuant to Section 363 of the US Bankruptcy Code.

“Customary motions have been filed with the US Bankruptcy Court to support the continuation of our daily operations for customers, employees and vendors, and we expect to continue to deliver the metallurgical coal that our customers depend on,” Corsa president and CEO Kevin Harrigan commented at the time.
