Stagnant economic growth and limited investment in new infrastructure in South Africa in recent years have taken a toll on the construction majors, some of which are in business rescue and have been forced to sell or close down operations.

Others continue to restructure and rightsize their operations to better match market demand, putting further pressure on South Africa's already high unemployment rate.

Construction companies also face the prospect of financial ruin, as a result of coordinated attacks on their projects and operations by a growing number of racketeers.

In this context, Creamer Media’s Construction 2020 Report examines South Africa’s construction industry over the past 12 months. The report provides insight into the business environment in the construction sector, key participants, local demand, corporate activity of the country’s major construction companies and issues, such as transformation, employment and the dearth of skills in the sector, as well as safety.

This report is a summary of information published in Engineering News and Mining Weekly, as well as of information available in the public domain over the past 12 months.

The report does not purport to provide analysis of market trends.
