Company Announcement - Coffey Managing Director John Douglas has congratulated PNG on celebrating 40 years of independence, a significant milestone in the country’s history. The country officially marks the milestone today, after achieving independence from Australia in 1975. John said he’d had the privilege to witness PNG’s growth and development, having lived and worked in the country a number of times.

“My first experience of PNG was when I was a kid in the 1960s,” he said. “It was a great place to grow up, and I have very good memories of our family’s time there.” John subsequently worked in PNG as a geotechnical engineer in the 1980s. More recently, he’s overseen Coffey’s operations in the country in his role as Managing Director.
He said the country’s rich natural resources had driven growth, with the mining and oil and gas industries playing a significant role in building skills. “I’ve seen how the energy and resources sector has developed,” he said.
“But I’ve also seen very real changes to people’s lives.”

Coffey has worked in PNG for 40 years, across the international development, mining and oil and gas industries.
We’ve delivered environmental and geotechnical services to the energy and resources sector. Coffey has also delivered a range of international development programs, particularly in education and public sector programs. Our staff have been sharing their experiences of working in PNG in the lead up to its day of independence. You can view their stories here
