Privately owned and managed healthcare group Clinix, in partnership with the South African Clinician Scientists Society, will on Saturday 24 November 2018 host the inaugural South African Health Excellence Awards at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

The first South African Health Excellence Awards aim to celebrate excellence in healthcare by identifying leaders in a range of categories who have contributed to research, teaching and advancement of medicine in South Africa.

In calling for nominations, CEO of Clinix Health Group, Dr Khamane ‘Kop’ Matseke, Group CEO said, “We are cognisant of the challenges in the South African health sector. What we do not talk about or celebrate sufficiently is the excellence, commitment and dedication that exists in the sector. It is for this reason that Clinix and the South African Clinician Scientists Society have come together to host the inaugural South African Health Excellence Awards.”

Nominations go live today, Tuesday 2 October and will remain open until Thursday 18 October, following which the adjudication process will commence. Nominees from the broader medical fraternity can enter any of the five categories and are welcome to enter multiple categories.

As part of the winners’ packages, Clinix will amongst others support a health cause of their choice, while celebrating and honouring them at the Awards on 24 November.

A number of well-respected South African businesspeople and leading medical practitioners will form the adjudication panel, including:

  • Professor Jimmy Volmink, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University
  • Professor Bruce Biccard, President of South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA), Second Professor and Second Chair in Anaesthesia Deputy Head of Department at the University of Cape Town
  • Professor Ncoza Dlova, Associate Professor, Chief Specialist and Head of Department of Dermatology at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine (NRMSM) at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal
  • Dr Judy Dlamini, Chancellor of Wits University and Chairperson of the Mbekani Group
  • Professor Modise Zacharia Koto, Head of General Surgery at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University
  • Dr Rolene Wagner, CEO of Frere Hospital
  • Dr Ernest Kenoshi, former CEO of the Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Acting Head of Department at the Gauteng Health Department

“We have chosen to partner with Clinix in hosting these Awards so that we can celebrate the excellent human calibre that exists in the South African medical sector. Too often, we forget that the men and women who choose to serve society in this way do so with commitment, passion and selflessness.

These qualities will be crucial to strengthening and improving our healthcare sector, particularly as we move towards the implementation of the National Health Insurance,” said Dr Salome Maswime, President of the South African Clinician Scientists Society.
