Centennial warns of Springvale job cuts
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Centennial Coal on Tuesday told Mining Weekly Online that the company would have no choice but to let the majority of its 300 employees at the Springvale mine, in New South Wales, go by August 21.
Centennial had hoped to extend the mine life of the Springvale mine by some 13 years through the implementation of an extension plan.
The existing mine produces 4.5-million tonnes a year of run-of-mine coal from the Lithgow seam, but development consent for the Springvale mine is expected to expire by the end of September.
The extension plan, if approved, will see the mine continue for another 13 years at current production levels.
The Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) in June delivered an initial report on the mine expansion plans, which identified four key issues that required further consideration, including the quality of water discharged into the Coxs river, surface water licensing, monitoring for impacts to swamps and swamp offsets.
While Centennial responded to the four issues raised in the report in July, Centennial’s executive GM for external affairs Katie Brassil said the New South Wales Department of Planning was still assessing the project and had yet to make a submission to the PAC for final determination.
The project would also require both state and federal approvals before it would be allowed to continue.
Brassil said that, in order for the company to protect local jobs and ensure sufficient close supply to the Mt Piper power station, the company was seeking approval of the Springvale mine extension as soon as possible.
