ASX-listed Brazilian Rare Earths has been awarded a trial mining licence for its Monte Alto rare earths and critical minerals project in Bahia.

The licence, granted by Brazil’s National Mining Agency, authorises the extraction of up to 2 000 t/y of product and enables the company to produce bulk samples for potential customer offtake agreements and metallurgical testing.

Trial mining will supply high-grade feedstock to the fully permitted pilot plant, which remains on track to begin operations in the third quarter of 2026.

The Monte Alto project is being developed using a low-impact, quarry-scale model, incorporating dry processing, high-yield ore sorting and reduced water usage, eliminating the need for conventional tailings dams.

MD and CEO Bernardo da Veiga said that trial mining would enable the company to advance commercial discussions while linking upstream production with downstream processing capability in Brazil.

“Just as importantly, trial mining can now supply high-grade material for customer evaluation and for our fully permitted pilot plant at Camaçari, linking upstream production with downstream processing capability in Brazil.

“That integrated model is central to our strategy to rebuild a leading Brazilian rare earths and critical minerals supply chain.”

Brazilian Rare Earths expects to submit an economic development plan to the regulator in the second quarter of 2026.
