PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton and its coal alliance partner Mitsubishi have cut about 230 jobs from its Saraji coal mine in an effort to reduce costs.

The miner reported on Friday that an extensive review of the Saraji operation, in Queensland, found that there were more workers at the opencut mine than necessary.

“A recent review of the Saraji mine by the company concluded that a fundamental improvement in the cost base of the opencut operation is required to ensure that it remains competitive," said asset president Lucas Dow.

“We want to ensure that the Saraji mine continues to operate viably, providing ongoing employment to the local region.”

Queensland Resources Council CEO Michael Roche said on Friday that the decision to cut 230 positions at the Saraji coking coal mine was another unwelcome reminder of domestic cost pressures and soft market conditions.

“There are few other options available to keep an export mine viable under these circumstances and this is a bitter pill to swallow for everyone concerned,” he added.

The Saraji mine is one of a number of mines being operated by the alliance in the Bowen basin. The job cuts were not expected to have an impact on operations, nor would it affect output, BHP stated.
