The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) of British Columbia has ordered Blackwater Gold to cease operation of the construction camp at the former Chu mineral site, about 110 km south of Vanderhoof.

According to an enforcement notice, the newly constructed worker camp at the former Chu site was in operation without authorisation. Blackwater’s environmental assessment certificate allows the project to have two camps – one for construction and one for operations – with both to be developed within the mine site only.

The Chu mineral camp is supporting construction of a transmission line for the project. While the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation permitted the camp, it advised that other authorisations may be required and that the project must comply with its existing certificate.

The EAO has now ordered that operations cease at the construction camp and that all camp infrastructure must be removed by 18:00 on August 31.

The EAO granted a two-week extension while members of BC Wildfire and wildfire contractors were also using the camp.
