Aranzazu mine, Mexico
Name of the Mine
Aranzazu mine.
Location
The mine is in the municipality of Concepción del Oro, in Zacatecas state, Mexico.
Mine Owner/s
Midtier copper/gold producer Aura Minerals, which owns 100% of the property through its wholly owned subsidiary Newington Corporation and its wholly owned Mexican subsidiary Aranzazu Holding.
Brief Description
Aranzazu is an underground copper/gold/silver mine in the historic Concepción del Oro mining district. Aura has described Aranzazu as one of the most important mineral deposits in Zacatecas state.
Brief History
The Concepción del Oro district has a long mining history dating back to 1546. In the sixteenth century, gold was discovered near the present site of Concepción del Oro, while Aranzazu remained largely undisturbed.
In 1889, Mazapil Copper Company of England acquired the old mines and expanded production to include copper and zinc. The operation later passed to American Smelting and Refining Company in 1962, then to the Federal Mining Commission in 1982, and thereafter to Macocozac in 1989.
Mining and milling ceased in 1999. Aura acquired a 100% interest in the mining concessions, plant, surface and water rights, as well as related assets, in 2008. Commercial production started in 2008, was paused from 2009 to 2011, resumed from 2011 to 2015, paused again from 2015 to 2018, and then restarted at full production.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Copper.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
Gold and silver. The mine could be mined for molybdenum, but molybdenum is not yet included in the current mineral resource or reserve estimates or in the economics.
Geology/Mineralisation
Aranzazu is a skarn deposit enriched in copper, gold and silver. The Concepción del Oro district lies within the Eastern Fold Belt of the Sierra Madre Oriental and contains sedimentary and igneous rocks ranging from the Jurassic to the Cenozoic outcrop.
Mineralisation is associated with Eocene granodioritic intrusions and occurs mainly in Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, particularly the Zuloaga and La Caja formations. The deposit extends for about 1.5 km along strike, up to 250 m across strike and about 850 m in depth. Copper mineralisation occurs mainly as chalcopyrite, with significant bornite and chalcocite, and deeper zones contain enargite and minor tennantite.
Reserves
As at December 31, 2025, the mine comprised proven and probable reserves estimated at 13.05-million tonnes grading 0.97% copper, 0.59 g/t gold and 16.62 g/t silver.
Resources
Total measured and indicated resources as at December 31, 2025, measured 8.73-million tonnes grading 0.96% copper, 0.64 g/t gold and 16 g/t silver. Inferred resources measured 5.62-million tonnes grading 0.85% copper, 0.48 g/t gold and 15 g/t silver.
Type of Mine
Underground mine.
Mining Method
Production mining is completed by mining contractor using conventional longhole stoping techniques. Two different longhole methods are used depending on mineralisation width and orientation.
Transverse stoping is the primary mining method. Longitudinal stoping started in late 2023 in the Glory Hole Hangingwall zone, where ore widths are narrower. Longitudinal stoping is still being refined as experience is gained.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The operation includes the Aranzazu underground mine and a conventional concentrator.
The process plant comprises primary, secondary and tertiary crushing and screening circuits feeding three primary ball mills operating in parallel, followed by flotation, concentrate thickening and filtration.
Tailings are pumped to the tailings storage facility.
Surface infrastructure includes an office and dry complex, maintenance shops, an assay laboratory, a core shack and ancillary offices. The mine also has a waste-rock pile and multiple tailings storage facilities, with TD5 currently active and being expanded.
Site power is supplied at 34.5 kV by the Comisión Federal de Electricidad network.
Fresh water for the process plant comes from the El Salero wellfield and is transported to site by pipeline.
Prospects
The Glory Hole zone remains open at depth and further work could support resource growth.
Aura has noted that good prospectivity exists across the property for carbonate replacement and skarn deposits, and has said that further exploration work is warranted. The company has further noted that potential exists for molybdenum to become an economic contributor with additional work.
