Another 175 redundancies at New Acland

Coal miner New Hope has announced that another 175 people are to be made redundant at its New Acland coal mine, as it continues to wait for final approvals to expand the Queensland mine.

The company last month announced 23 redundancies at the corporate office and the Brisbane port facility.

The Queensland government has deferred the approval of the New Acland Stage 3 project, citing ongoing legal appeals.

The New Acland mine is nearing the end of the Stage 2 life, but the Stage 3 expansion will increase production from 4.8-million tonnes to 7.5-million tonnes a year, extending the project’s mine life by about 12 years.

Meanwhile, New Hope reported increased coal production of 11.3-million tonnes and sales of 11.5-million tonnes in its 2020 financial year. The numbers were driven by the full-year interest of 80% in the Bengalla joint venture.
