11 000-plus Northen Cape youths to benefit from skills development initiative

NEW PROFICIENCIES The programme will train people in a range of artisanal skill sets such as boiler making, welding, diesel mechanics and electrical engineering
Mineral Resources Deputy Minister Godfrey Oliphant launched a new youth development programme, Our Youth, Our Future, in Springbok, in the Northern Cape, in December.
The programme focuses on the skilling of unemployed youth as artisans in the Northern Cape and Western Cape. This project is cofunded by the Mining Qualification Authority (MQA) and State-funded skills development trust the National Skills Fund, and will be imple- mented from 2016 to 2018.
“The programme will be run by the MQA and its aim is to provide training and skills development opportunities for about 11 250 people,” MQA stakeholder relations executive manager Carol Maila tells Mining Weekly.
She says the programme will place a special emphasis on reskilling unemployed youth in the mining communities and on providing alternative skills for retrenched miners.
Maila states that the programme will train people in a range of artisanal skill sets, such as boilermaking, welding, diesel mechanics, electrical engineering and a range of portable skills.
She says there is no financial support from the Department of Mineral Resources for this programme; however, the department is an enabler of the initiative.
