Siyanda Bakgatla mine signs landmark five-year wage deal
The Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM) has negotiated a landmark five-year wage agreement with trade unions the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and the National Union of Mineworkers.
The agreement is for March 1, 2022, to February 28, 2027.
SBPM sustainable development executive Hope Tyira says the agreement will benefit all of the company’s employees, while providing SBPM certainty with regard to its wage bill for the next five years, enabling better planning of the company’s sustainability.
He adds that the company enjoys sound relations with its employees, based in part on SBPM’s share participation scheme – which ensures that employees own 7.3% of the mine, while the host communities own 27% through a trust.
This new collective agreement covers specific wage increases for the next five years and a number of allowances, including home owners’ allowances, living out allowances, rock drill operators’ and sewerage plant allowances, medical aid and provident fund contributions, long service awards and family responsibility/parental leave.
The agreement precludes industrial action on matters covered in the contract.
“We are delighted that the unions have agreed to support us in our application to the Department of Labour for exemptions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act for the five-year period due to operational requirements relating to shift schedules. They will also support management in our efforts to reduce absenteeism,” Tyira concludes.
The SBPM is a platinum group metal producing mine located in Swartklip, Limpopo, employing 5 200 full-time employees and about 1 500 contractors.
