Kumba Iron Ore performed exceptionally well at the Inter Mines Group Associated Sports (IMGAS) Tournament, hosted by the iron-ore miner at Konka, in Rustenburg, last month.

The tournament celebrated its twentieth anniversary this year and was underpinned by a sense of unity and celebration.

The main objective of the five-day sporting event is to ensure the growth and development of leadership through sport within the mining and mining-related industries. The tournament promotes good fellowship among participants who come from a variety of backgrounds and provides an opportunity for participants to play against those they might not otherwise have met. IMGAS chairperson Douw Ramdharee said the tournament over the last 20 years had one common purpose and that is to develop, empower and unite learners through sport.

Six mining-related training institutes took part in the tournament, namely integrated manganese producer Samancor, energy and chemicals group Sasol, platinum producer Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), black-owned private artisan training academy the Artisan Training Institute, gold miner Sibanye Gold and Kumba.

Kumba took top honours in the netball final against Sibanye Gold, in the rugby finals against Sasol and in the soccer against Amplats.
