Name: Cowal mine.

Location: The Cowal mine is located about 38 km north-east of West Wyalong, in New South Wales, Australia.

Controlling Company: Barrick Gold.

Brief History: Mining operations at the Cowal mine started in 2005 and operations are currently approved to continue until the end of December 2019.

Brief Description: Cowal is an openpit operation, which is currently using a fleet of dump trucks, excavators and ancillary equipment in the mining process.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Cowal mine currently mines the E42 ore deposit, which occurs within a sequence of semi- conformable sedimentary, volcaniclastic and volcanic rock, and is overlain by recent sedimentation of the Bland Creek Palaeochannel and lake-fill events.

Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at December 31, 2013, were 5 277-million tons grading 0.034 g/t of gold.

Resources: Total mineral resources as at December 31, 2013, were 6 981-million tons grading 0.032 g/t of gold.

Products: Gold.

Mining Method: Conventional openpit mining methods are used at Cowal. Waste rock and ore is broken using a routine sequence of in-pit drilling and blasting.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The openpit mining operations are supported by on-site facilities, including waste rock emplacements, water management infrastructure and/or storage, a process plant and tailings storage facilities.

Mined waste rock from the openpit is hauled to waste rock emplacements. Ore mined from the openpit is hauled directly to the primary crusher, run-of-mine pad or low-grade ore stockpile prior to processing.

Gold is extracted from the ore using a conventional carbon- in-leach cyanide leaching circuit at the process plant. The gold product is recovered and poured as gold bars or doré.

Tailings are pumped to the tailings storage facilities. Water requirements for the Cowal mine are sourced from in-house water supplies and external sources, including the Bland Creek Palaeochannel borefield and eastern saline borefield.

Prospects: Barrick aims to modify the Cowal gold mine’s development consent (DA 14/98) under section 75W of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act of 1979 for the mine’s extension modification.

The modification involves continued operations at the existing Cowal mine within mining lease 1535 for another five years to allow for an additional 700 000 oz of gold production.
