BHP Billiton announces board changes
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed mining giant BHP Billiton has appointed Anita Frew as independent nonexecutive director, effective September 15, while Carlos Cordeiro, who has served as nonexecutive director since 2005, will retire from the board in November.
Frew had over 18 years’ experience as a director and chairperson on public company boards across a range of global sectors, including chemicals, engineering and finance. She currently held the position of chairperson designate of chemicals group Croda International, as well as Lloyds Banking Group deputy chairperson.
“Frew’s appointment reflected the structured and rigorous approach taken by the BHP Billiton board’s succession planning, having regard to the skills, experience and attributes required to effectively govern and manage risk within the business.
“[Her] depth of experience in strategic and risk management, marketing and governance across a range of sectors will enable her to make a significant contribution to the board,” BHP Billiton chairperson Jac Nasser said in a statement.
He also thanked Cordeiro for his valuable contribution to the board and development of BHP Billiton during his ten-year tenure.
With the passing of Sir John Buchanan last month, Baroness Shriti Vadera was appointed as the senior independent director for BHP Billiton and member of the nomination and governance committee, effective immediately.
Baroness Vadera has been a BHP Billiton nonexecutive director since 2011.
