JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has welcomed the decision by the plenary of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) to endorse South Africa as the new chair of its working group on monitoring.

The Minister is currently leading a South African delegation to the plenary meeting of the KPCS in Dubai. The plenary session is the highest decision-making body of the KPCS and meets once a year.

The working group on monitoring monitors the implementation of the KPCS by participants and is responsible for the peer review mechanism.

Botswana has been endorsed as the vice-chair of the working group.

Both countries will take up these positions in January 2017 for a period of three years.

Established in 2003, the KPCS is a joint initiative by governments, industry and civil society to stem the flow of conflict diamonds.

South Africa is a founding member and has previously held the position of chair on two occasions – 2003 and 2013.
