JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A mineworker at Gold Fields’ Kloof mine, near Carletonville, died during the Monday night shift, spokesperson Julian Gwillim confirmed on Tuesday.
Details of what led to the fatality were still unavailable, with Gwillim saying that the inspectors were currently investigating the incident, which took place at the H shaft of the mine.
Work in the section of the mine where the accident occurred had been stopped.
More than 130 mineworkers have lost their lives in South Africa’s mining industry so far this year.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) called on its members to observe a day of mournining.
"Contrary to what many argue, death in the industry remains a corporate norm and those who hint that the figures are down may never have gone through the pain of losing a loved one through deliberate acts of both ignorance and negligence," NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said.
