WINDOW ON GROWTH

12th October 2018

Container ships moored alongside ship-to-shore cranes at Mombasa port, in Kenya. The East African economy expanded by 6.3% in the three months to the end of June, up from 5.7% in the previous quarter, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reported last month. The acceleration was supported by a recovery in manufacturing and agriculture, which contribute about 30% to the country’s total output. Drought conditions in 2017 resulted in the East African country expanding by only 4.9%, its slowest pace in five years. Growth has since been revised upwards for 2018, owing largely to improved weather conditions.
