PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Nickel miner Western Areas has delivered a solid fourth quarter during the three months to June, with the miner hitting its production targets in the full year.

Western Areas produced 6 381 t of nickel during the June quarter, up from the 6 236 t produced in the previous quarter, with full-year production reaching 24 442 t.

Nickel-in-concentrate production during the quarter reached 5 368 t, with full-year nickel in concentrate reported at 21 060 t. Some 5 176 t of nickel was sold during the three months to June, bringing nickel sales during the full year to 20 549 t.

MD Dan Lougher said on Monday that the June quarter was about delivering guidance and focusing on the next generation of organic growth projects.

“Pleasingly, the mill recovery enhancement project (MREP) delivered its first product to the high-grade specification of between 45% and 50% nickel, with go-forward efforts now focused on ramping up volumes.”

With the specifications of the MREP now achieved, the next step is to ramp up production and to iron out minor technical issues from the start up. Lougher said that capital works have also started on the construction of new filtration and bagging facilities to ultimately allow the product to be sold into separate, new offtake contracts.

Construction of these facilities will be completed by the end of the September quarter.

Meanwhile, at the Odysseus project, the start of early works and the awarding of major contracts were significant milestones during the quarter, Lougher said.

“The definitive feasibility study remains on schedule for delivery late September and our expectation is that Odysseus will have a mine life in excess of ten years.”
