Name of the Project
WAH2 project.

Location
Western Australian Maitland Strategic Industrial Area.

Project Owner/s
Hexagon Energy Materials.

Project Description
A prefeasibility study has demonstrated the technical and financial viability of WAH2.

The proposed WAH2 facility will produce low-carbon hydrogen using proven technology to reform natural gas feedstock, carbon capture and storage (CCS) in depleted gas reservoirs, and harnessing northern Western Australia’s renewable-energy potential.

The hydrogen produced will be converted into low-carbon ammonia, offering reduced processing and transportation costs, and greater energy efficiency than the alternatives of liquid hydrogen or liquid organic hydrogen.

The project will be completed in phases.

Phase 1 is based on 600 000 t/y of potential ammonia production capacity, doubling to 1.2-million tonnes a year in Phase 2.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Phase 1 and Phase 2 development is expected to deliver a net present value, at an 8% discount rate, of A$486-million at an internal rate of return of 10.5%.

Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision is targeted for the end of 2024, with first production expected in 2027.
