JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diamond producer Trans Hex’s March tender sale of diamonds from its South African operations amounted to R106.5-million, with the miner selling 5 886 ct at an average price of $1 684/ct at an exchange rate of R10.75 to the dollar.

Nine single stones were sold for more than $10 000/ct, including one stone of 22.5 ct from the Baken mine, on the banks of the lower Orange river, which sold for over $49 000/ct.

In addition, the Somiluana mine, in Angola, in which Trans Hex held a 33% stake, realised a total of $2.31-million for its February sale, after selling 5 120 ct at an average price of $451/ct.

The company said on Monday that these sales reflected continued positive momentum in the rough diamond market and strong demand for Trans Hex's production.

Production at the group’s South African operations amounted to 52 081 ct for the year ended March 31, with 21 849 ct produced in the first six months of the year and 30 232 ct produced in the latter half of the 12-month period.

Production at Somiluana amounted to 72 041 ct for the year ending March 31, with 35 779 ct produced in the first half of the year and 36 262 ct produced in the last six months.

The next sale of South African production would be held in May, while Somiluana conducted monthly sales.

The group expected to release its financial results for the year ended March 31 on or about June 3.
