Thungela’s Goedehoop Colliery in partnership with Barloworld Equipment handed over fully kitted teacher’s communal facilities consisting of a staff room, kitchen, and boardroom, to the KwaZamokuhle Secondary School in Mpumalanga. The facilities, constructed using shipping containers will aid teachers and administrators in carrying out their duties more effectively, fostering an environment where learning and teaching can thrive for future generations.

The R1.8 million initiative executed in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Education alongside the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality fulfils one of Thungela impact goals - to improve access to quality education and skills development.

Tman Mphokane, Goedehoop Colliery’s General Manager said, “Goedehoop is a member of the greater community in Mpumalanga, and we remain committed to implementing initiatives that have a direct impact in the lives of the community. Education is the key to unlocking the world, therefore we are intentional about supporting the delivery of quality education through such initiatives.”

The school’s Acting Principal, Mrs. Manzini said, “This facility will make a huge difference to the way we work here at school. The school historically had no staff room or boardroom where teachers could sit together and plan their lessons, as well as carry out administrative duties. The improved working and learning environment will go a long way in enhancing the quality of education delivered by the school.”

KwaZamokuhle Secondary School employs thirty-six teachers, and the new communal facilities will come in handy when they conduct internal meetings, meet with parents and host stakeholders.

“We are pleased to have walked this journey with our partners in this initiative. What we have achieved demonstrates the change we can make when we work together.” concluded Mphokane.

The shipping container conversions of the facility structure created four short-term job opportunities for parents at the school.
