PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Sweden's environmental authorities have given ASX-listed Talga Resources the green light to start graphite test mining at its Vittangi project.

The test mining permit will allow for the removal of 2 000 m3 of graphite ore within a specified part of the Nunasvaara resource, and will be valid until the end of September 2018.

“We are very pleased to secure the trial mining permit. This represents a significant milestone as we prepare our demonstration plant construction and it is encouraging that the permit conditions are industry standard, and very much in line with our expectations,” said Talga MD Mark Thompson on Thursday.

With the permit in hand, Talga can begin preparation for site works, contractor selection, equipment mobilisation and other ancillary works to enable the extraction programme.

“Vittangi has a historic pit that we will operate from and ultimately the test mining will allow us to rehabilitate what is essentially a degraded site. Additionally, the trial of techniques and processing will provide information towards the optimal approach for potential full-scale development,” Thompson added.

Talga is hoping to start mining during June this year, and it is anticipated that the programme will be completed before the end of September.

Talga is also constructing a graphene demonstration plant in central Germany that will produce between 100 t/y and 200 t/y of graphene, with feedstock sourced from Talga’s projects in Sweden.
