South Africa has the potential to outstrip world in going green

The unveiling by President Cyril Ramaphosa of several far-reaching energy interventions has the potential to set the country on a once-in-a-generation economic growth path. South Africa not only has the sun, wind, land and now the blessing for the generation of green electrons in bulk, but it also already has green molecules flowing in the form of hydrogen that is powering a massive truck in an openpit mine in Limpopo.

In addition, this country has a listed company with an impressive share of the global grey hydrogen market, and another company that is helping Germany and Japan in their journey to produce decarbonised steel with the help of green hydrogen and our high-quality iron-ore. Moreover, we have been producing green hydrogen at pilot plant level at a local university since 2012 and have graduates well versed in the subject of renewable energy and green hydrogen.

The building of vanadium batteries and mini-grids to store and distribute green electricity is under way locally and our Public Investment Corporation is one of the anchor investors in a venture capital company that is funding a company specialising in the transport and storage of green hydrogen, which is the equivalent of clean electricity in waiting.
