South American airline group Latam Airlines showcased the newest addition to its fleet – an Airbus A350 XWB – which will operate between Johannesburg, South Africa, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The airliner says the A350 XWB is about 30% quieter and emits 25% less greenhouse gases than other aircraft used for long-haul flights. Since it began operating on the Johannesburg-Sao Paulo route on August 1, 2019, the aircraft has recorded a 60- to 70-minute reduction in flying time between the two destinations, carrying 30 passengers in business class and 309 in economy class. Latam started flying from Sao Paulo to South Africa in 2016 with three flights a week, which has since increased to five flights a week. Photograph: Engineering News Chief Photographer Dylan Slater
