Recent hostilities in the Red Sea have added to the risks that global shippers will have to navigate in 2024. Reuters reports that they also face the prospect of significant disruptions from other conflicts, including any possible further souring of China-Taiwan relations, as well as droughts affecting key routes such as the Panama Canal. Should these risks increase or materialise, there could be delays that raise costs for retailers globally. Photograph: Reuters
