JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Western Australian Environment Minister Albert Jacob has given his approval for a 160 km railway line and a 40 km conveyor system to link the Pilbara Iron Ore Project (PIOP), being developed by Flinders Mines, with the proposed Balla Balla Infrastructure (BBI) port, in the Pilbara.

The approval allows Rutila Resources to construct and operate the railway line and conveyor system, which company chairperson Nicholas Curtis on Wednesday described as a “critical piece of infrastructure to advance the vision for its project into a reality”.

The approval catered for ancillary infrastructure to construct and operate the rail system to deliver ore from the PIOP to the port.

Ministerial approval for the BBI port, which is being developed in a joint venture with Todd Corporation subsidiary Todd Minerals, was originally granted in August 2013 and then upgraded in January 2015 for an expansion to allow Rutila to export ore from third parties through the proposed transshipment facilities.

The BBI port will also be serviced by Rutila’s Balla Balla magnetite/vanadium/titanium project.

New Zealand-based Todd, which last month made a takeover offer for Rutila Resources, recently signed a A$65-million deal with Flinders to gain ownership of the proposed 25-million-tonne-a-year PIOP.
