Drilling expert Rosond is bringing together automation, software and data analysis technology to create a “new-age drilling rig”.

The drill is being developed with an international manufacturing partner and the group aims to “transform the way drilling is done”.

“Automation and software will bring the drilling industry to a new level of technological advancement and productivity,” says Rosond MD Ricardo Ribeiro.

“Data analytics from the machine’s telemetry system, which has been in development for four years, will open new doors,” he adds, noting that a telemetry system is a collection of remote sensors that generate and wirelessly transmit useful data back to a central point for processing and interpretation.

Telemetry will include real-time information for the client and prevent breakdowns.

“This system is particularly important for monitoring a drilling operation and making it cost effective and efficient,” he adds.

The captured data and the resultant insights will be helpful in understanding the nature of an exploration area’s geology.

Rosond will have 28 drill rigs with telemetry systems in use at a single client.

“The amount of data we will accumulate will further help us in our developments not only in drilling but also in tooling optimisation,” Ribeiro says.

Rosond expects to achieve improved drilling efficiency of between 30% and 50% through the use of data and innovative software.

The company will be reaching out to local universities to assist in extracting even more value from its existing data.
