JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diversified mining major Rio Tinto on Thursday officially opened a new phase of its 'mine of the future' technology with the launch of a processing excellence centre (PEC) in Brisbane, which monitors processing data from seven of the company’s copper and coal operations spread across the globe.

Rio Tinto CE Sam Walsh said the opening marked another step in the roll-out of the company’s future mine programme, aimed at better productivity, environmental protection and safety.

Rio Tinto innovation head John McGagh added that the PEC facilitated focus on mineral processing across a broad range of international sites.

The London-, New York- and Sydney-listed Rio Tinto has been working with JKTech, Schneider Electric, Metso CISA, iGATE and Queensland University through the Rio Tinto Centre for Advanced Mineral Sorting to develop the PEC, which is linked to copper processing at Oyu Tolgoi, in Mongolia, Kennecott, in the US as well as five Australian coal sites.
