PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining major Rio Tinto has increased the coal reserve estimate at its Kestrel underground mine, in Queensland, by 62-million tonnes.

The project is now estimated to host 185-million tonnes of coal reserves, up from the 123-million tonnes estimated in 2016.

The increase in the ore reserve reflects continued work undertaken at Rio Tinto’s coal deposits, and is based on the rigorous examination of leases, including an updated geological mode, updated mine layout, revised coal product classifications and revised loss and dilution and productivity assumptions.

Rio told shareholders on Thursday that the Kestrel mineral resource had now decreased by 65-million tonnes, from 306-million tonnes to 241-million tonnes.
