Welcome to Creamer Media’s Resources Watch, a weekly video round-up of the events and people making and shaping the news in the mining industry.

This week:
Mintek unveils its pilot rare earth solvent extraction plant.
Glencore puts millions into education in the Mpumalanga coalfields.
And, South Africa’s geoscience is ‘desperately’ underfunded.

Local State-owned mineral and metallurgical innovation company Mintek has officially opened a rare earth solvent extraction pilot plant at its head office in Johannesburg.

Mintek technology division GM Alan McKenzie

Mining and marketing giant Glencore launched a R75-million state-of-the-art school in Phola for learners in Mpumalanga’s coalfields, where it has a number of coal operations, and despite the fall in global prices, Glencore remained positive about the future growth in coal demand, especially in developing countries.

Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg

Government geoscientists are desperately underfunded, which is depriving South Africa of the geological potential that is essential for minerals exploration.

Nedbank Capital mining and metals investment banker Paul Miller
