PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Malian government has awarded junior Papillon Resources a mining permit for its flagship Fekola gold project.

The mining permit would be valid for 30 years and covers the entire 75 km2 of the Fekola exploration permit.

Along with the environmental permit, which was awarded in April last year, the mining permit was the final significant permitting milestone for Papillon, as well as the final approval required for mine development.

“We are now one very significant step closer to the start of mining operations at Fekola. Following the award of our environmental permit, this is an important step in the permitting process for Papillon, further reducing the risk of our development execution strategy,” said MD and CEO Mark Connelly.

The Fekola project was expected to deliver about 300 000 oz/y, with design and engineering for the project set for completion in the second half of 2014. A final investment decision on the project would then be taken.

Connelly noted that Papillon was currently conducting a technical review of the prefeasibility study, prior to starting a definitive feasibility study (DFS), to incorporate a new mineral resource estimate into the mining schedule, improve infrastructure locations and site layout, as well as to further metallurgical testwork.

The work was aimed at reducing capital and operating costs.

The DFS was expected to start in the first quarter of 2014.
